INTRODUCTION
Arecanut is one of the important commercial crops. India is largest Arecanut producing country in the world with 54% in area and 56% production. Arecanut finds a place in all religious. Social and cultural functions in India; Arecanut is used as masticatory either with betel leaves or as plain or as supari. Arecanut has limited uses in Ayurveda and vetenary medicines because of its several alkaloids. Research on the alternative & other uses of Arecanut is the need of the hour. And we must note that, ancient people from Vedic times introduced Arecanut along with betel leaves and some other condiments for its medicinal values.
Why we use Arecanut for pain balm?
Some alkaloid
like “arecoline “are present from 0.07 to 0.1% in the nut. It is having more
medicinal uses scientists discovered them. Many observations done by the
scientists also prove the statement made in our Ayurveda literature by eminent scholars
like Charaka, Sushrutha and others. Arecanut is well known as an appetiser,
which is also digestive and carminative.
Arecanut forms an astringent gargle when freely diluted with water.
Dried nut increases the flow of saliva, lessens perspiration.
Purification
of Arecanut for medicinal purposes
To
remove the deleterious effects of Arecanut blend it with khandira and cardamom.
Arecanut boiled in milk for 3 hours loses its alkaloidal impurities, and then
it can be used for specific medicinal purposes. Steam boiled Arecanut also
loses its impurities. Then it can be used for any medicinal purposes.
Medicinal uses of Arecanut
Arecanut
is one among the “Pancha Sugandha “according to Ayurveda. Tannin is main
component presence in the Arecanut. In Ayurvedic system of Medicine there are
particular methods of purifying both tender and dried Arecanut for medicinal
purposes. They advise -not to consume Arecanut alone. They add thirteen spices
along with betel leaf. According to Ayurvedic texts, tender and ripe nuts are
especially used for different type’s skin diseases and as wound washers. Tender
nuts can also be used in medicinal soaps. Apart from the above uses there are
hundreds of other medicinal uses are mentioned in Sanskrit texts and also in folk
medicine. For diabetes, obesity, blood pressure etc. The boiling point of Arecanut
is 230degree. It is easily dissolved with water, alcohol, ether.
Result and conclusion
Since more than two years I am carrying out research as laid on the lines of our ancient medicinal traditional folklore system and research about Arecanut. The result is very encouraging. Research carried out by the guide line of Shankar Bhat. He is successfully tried the Arecanut for medicinal use. Arecanut is proved as best medicine for the following diseases. Skin related eruptions and pain problems. The pain can be cured by Arecanut because of fat content and mainly 28% tannin is there in Arecanut. And also in my research activity I concluded that the Arecanut can used for commercial purposes like Skin ointments, after shave lotions, pimple cures, cosmetics can be manufactured by using Arecanut alone as well as blending with other herbs. The tender shoots and young leaves are abortive. Extraction of the young leaves is good for massaging for muscle pains.
